SpongeBob & Happiness: An Introduction
Welcome to a new series of short essays focusing on optimism and mental health: SpongeBob & Happiness.
You can guess the subject we’ll be honouring. Nickelodeon’s cornerstone character, SpongeBob Squarepants. Every week we’ll watch an episode and delve into the world of Bikini Bottom, analyzing the titular character’s interactions with others, the way those characters react to story and plot, and everything in between.
Here’s a breakdown of what it’ll look like:
Every post will begin with a brief recap of the episode’s plot. We’ll talk about what happened literally, figuratively, and then how the themes of mental health and happiness come into play in the episode.
Next, we’ll apply what we’ve learned to real life and the ways we can connect with the themes and story ourselves on a deeper level.
At the end of the post, I’ll give a call to action – whether it’s about rearranging your perspective on your day tomorrow, or reaching out to someone in your life, it will have to do with the episode and what we’ve discovered about ourselves in the study of it. We’ll get a conversation started within the community in the comments and on social media. After all, this is meant to be a shared study, and all people from all walks of life are welcome to share their experiences and what the episode means to them.
But mostly, it’s going to be some good, SpongeBobian fun. We’ll be ending each post with a funny quote from the episode, which will most likely be nonsensical and have nothing to do with the topics at hand.
